Learning to Ring

Ever stood and watched us ring - look easy?
Well if you decide to try it here are a few myths explained.
  • you do not need strength to ring - it is a balancing and control act. No one could lift even the lightest of our bells which weigh around 3cwt (about 6 large potato bags!)
  • you do not need to read music - whilst the bells can be musical and it is useful to have a sense of rhythm. The "tunes" bellringers use are number pattern based and range from very easy patterns to severely complex ones. As most people can play chopsticks; most people can learn the starter methods at the very least!
  • it looks easy - may be but please don't expect to come up and ring straight away. It typically takes about 3 to 10 hours to be able to ring a bell sometimes longer. But don't let this put you off as it will set you off on a lifetime of enjoyment and endless people to meet.

Once you can handle a bell the sky is your limit - you can ring basic methods or progress upwards and certainly never stop learning something. There is always something else to find out, new towers to ring at and new people to meet all over the country.

Well known people who have learnt to ring bells include:
John Betjeman, John Bunyan, Donald Sinden, Frank Muir, Ed Balls, Jo Brand, Alan Titchmarsh, Timmy Mallet
So you would be joining a good range of company!
